Salt, pepper, stove parts, 1960’s apron

This apron which loudly states “To Hell with Housework” was from my mother’s kitchen repertoire. It was a gag gift from the 1960’s which pre-dated the 1970’s feminist movement in which I came of age. This self portrait made of salt and pepper embodies my anger as my mother made me collude with her in a subservient role of serving dinner to my father and brothers. Maybe this apron was her silent rebellion.
